Dirty Dancing Headed to Broadway?
The producers of the upcoming national tour of Dirty Dancing - The Classic Story on Stage are billing it as the "pre-Broadway American premiere."
Thanks for the warning.
I'll be catching the show during the Boston leg of its tour in February. Never let it be said that I'm unwilling to give even the most cynical, venal, and misconceived shows the opportunity to prove me wrong.
After all, I saw Happy Days. And after an extended period of intensive therapy, I may yet be able to mitigate the damage to my psyche. Just in time for Dirty Dancing.

Well this should be interesting. When I first saw that this was coming out I cringed. I am a little more optimistic. Ill see anything but still this makes me a little nervous.

Chris, It's interesting that all these pop films that I've never seen are being turned into stage musicals. I never saw "Shrek" and now "Dirty Dancing." Would you recommend brushing up on them in advance?

Actually, Steve, I'd recommend Shrek whether it was being made into a musical or not. It's truly a great movie. Funny, touching, great animation. I have profound reservations about a stage adaptation, but of course I already have my ticket.
As for Dirty Dancing, it's fine, but hardly a classic. The big problem that I have with the stage version is that they haven't even taken the time to integrate the songs. There's just a band that sings them in the background. Say what you want about Saturday Night Fever or Footloose, at least they tried to put the songs in the mouths of the characters.

I've never seen Dirty Dancing. Just by the title alone, it doesn't interest me all that much. But I guess you can't judge by the title. I did see Shrek a few years ago. It was ok, just not one of my favorite animated movies. I liked the donkey, though.

I can't tell you how excited I am about Dirty Dancing being a Broadway show. it is one of the greatest movies and it has great music and dancing.
I personally am doubting Shrek. It was a good movie but I don't think they can pull it off. I hope Broadway proves me wrong. Broadway needs a better year.
Although I am excited about Dirty Dancing, I would like to see more original shows. I am getting sick of seeing movies turned into Broadway shows.
