It's official (or as official as Hollywood casting news ever really gets): Christine Baranski will indeed join Meryl Streep in the movie version of Mamma Mia. Baranski will play Tanya, Donna Sheridan's oh-so-blasé friend, who sings "Does Your Mother Know" to the sexually precocious Pepper.
The cast is evidently already in London to pre-record the soundtrack, and includes the previously rumored Julie Walters and the announced Pierce Brosnan, as well as the heretofore unmentioned Colin Firth.
Meryl Streep was also recently cast opposite Phillip Seymour Hoffman in the movie version of John Patrick Shanley's Pulitzer-Prize-winning Doubt. Yeah, it's not a musical, and we don't really care about non-musicals, but it is interesting how much stage-to-screen work Ms. Streep has been landing lately. Much to the chagrin of Tony winner Cherry Jones, I'm sure.
But, hey, it's friggin' Meryl Streep. When you're up against Meryl for a part, you might as well just give up, or hope her interests suddenly turn elsewhere.
