I'm not nearly as excited about the upcoming movie version of Mamma Mia as I am about that of Sweeney Todd. But the former does boast a fairly spectacular cast, including
Meryl Streep, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Pierce Brosnan, and Colin Firth.
And watching the newly available trailer of same certainly has me intrigued. There's a definite and distinct visual style, which is surprising given that this is Phyllida Lloyd's feature-directing debut. And, although it's tough to judge the performances from the trailer, there's no question that the film will at the very least be a lively affair.
"Mamma Mia" is scheduled to open in July 2008.
I'm off to NYC tomorrow for a little Pre-Christmas self-indulgence. I'll finally be getting to see The Little Mermaid, after the stagehands' strike rendered my previous ticket null and void. And I'll also be doing the tacky tourist-y Holiday thang by taking in Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas, The Radio City Christmas Spectacular, and Cirque du Soleil's Wintuk.
Yeah, I know. But I guess my seeing, and downright enjoying, White Christmas in Boston primed the pump for more seasonal fare. Will I be of a cynical mindset and trash these shows left and right? Or will the Christmas spirit temper my naturally sardonic nature? Watch this space and see for yourself.
Hope you're taking the train this time (or at least leaving a little earlier!). Safe travels!
